The Stokes Volunteer Center has received a grant from The Bill Johnson Trust to benefit Stokes County of The Winston-Salem Foundation in the amount of $1,079. This grant will enable the Volunteer Center to continue service to the agencies of Stokes County with volunteer support and will enable them to continue helping individuals find their place of volunteer service.
The Bill Johnson Trust to Benefit Stokes County was established in December 1999 to honor the leadership and vision of William (Bill) Howard Johnson, Jr., who was born and lived in Walnut Cove, Stokes County, North Carolina from May 5, 1945 until February 2, 1999. Bill Johnson left a legacy of outstanding public service to the people of Stokes County. Much of his contribution is known through the results of many and varied projects and service initiatives that he launched or shepherded through to completion. He accomplished through others based on a fundamental faith in the goodness and generosity of the human spirit. This was his way, and it is his lasting gift to the people of Stokes County.
The Winston-Salem Foundation is a community foundation that supports charitable programs in the greater Forsyth County area. Founded in 1919 by Colonel Francis Fries with a $1,000 gift, it now administers over 1,100 funds with total custodial assets of over $300 million. In 2007, The Foundation granted more than $30 million to charitable causes, nearly $2 million of which was in competitive grants.
